Trips to Doctors, Friends, or Traveling: 1. What are your dietary requirements? 2. How long will you be in the car, away from home? 3. How often do you want to eat? 4. Are you familiar with the route & destination or are they new? 5. Are there conveniently spaced towns or rest stops 40 to 50 miles apart? 6. Do you know restaurants along the way that can meet your dietary needs? Who may know?
Steps to make when traveling, easier: 1.Do what works for you. When you are away from home you want to feel your best, so it's best to stick as close as possible to your normal eating patterns (even though the desire to cheat is great).
2. Call ahead to your hotel or hosts & ask about the restaurants in the area. Put your mind at ease. Call your destination or doctor when running late!
3. Pack plenty of your favorite snacks. Think about the mess factor when eating in the car. Non-perishable items last longest & need the least fuss: whole grain crackers, nuts. sunflower seeds, snack bars, fresh fruit or cereal. (pureed food is for babies not older persons).
4. A thermal bag or ice pack make perishable items easy: cheese (pre-sliced or sliced before you go), no fat lunch meat, pudding/yogurt, sliced vegetables: peppers, carrots or celery.
5. Pack plenty of water/fruit juices to keep you from dehydrating. Traveling may not be as spontaneous, but it can still be enjoyable for you and those who are depending on you.
With simple pre-planning you can enjoy a trip away from home. Pay attention to how you feel. If you're not feeling well now, think about what you ate in the last 12-24 hours. Headache? Heart burn? High acid foods may cause indigestion, a dessert may cause fatigue & going too long between meals may leave you anxious/cranky.
We at New Beginnings want your travels to go as smooth as possible whether your going to the doctors or on holiday. (end)
