THINGS FAMILIES TO REMEMBER
* Reinforce the behaviors you would like to see increase. Like a garden "water the behaviors you'd like to grow."
* When safety is not an issue, ignore the behavior you would like to decrease. Do not laugh at an inappropriate behavior which can be perceived as accepting the negative behavior or perceived as mocking. Model the behaviors you would like to see. Set the example for others to follow.
* Avoid situations that provoke behaviors you are trying to reduce. Be flexible to structure an environment with the use of cues for positive behaviors. Plan for rest periods. Redirect the person rather than challenging them. Don’t go to battle with a person it is ineffective.
* Seek professional help sooner rather than later. Always keep regular doctor appointments.
* Brain injury is a tricky thing as you learn to identify the persons strengths & weaknesses. Always use age appropriate language to the brain injured person & FOR YOURSELF! Don’t treat any differently-abled person like a child.
Your language & gestures should always reflect your age & actions. ##
