The Experiences of the Brain Injured & their Families have taught us a lot!
Over the past several decades information about Brain Injury has increased, inspired, & developed from sources such as: Primary Care Physicians, Nurses, Families, Neurologists, & from the Survivors of TBI impact. We wish to share with you some of what we have learned about the new lives of survivors of brain injury.
There is indeed life! Brain injury is a different life style, sometimes radically different, than life before the "Brain Injury." Most still draw a dividing line at that point in time…if we can remember it. What is important is to know that the line doesn't stop the JOY, GROWTH, or LAUGHTER…in fact, many come to realize that life has a new value.
For some, the "Trauma" is seen as a turning point to lives more fulfilling, giving & utilizing of talents never dreamed-striving to achieve the things people over the world achieve, by sharing, attending support groups, family get-togethers & midnight phone calls…those with brain injury get through the day.
Remember...
1. Every 21 seconds a brain injury occurs in USA.
2. 5.3 million Americans (2% of US population) live with disabilities from brain injuries, 250,000 of these live in Indiana.
3. Each year ONE MILLION people in the USA are treated & released from emergency rooms & 50,000 die.
4. The cost of traumatic brain injury, in the United States, exceeds $48 BILLION annually.
Brain injuries are the #1 killer of persons under the age of 44. They kill more Americans under the age of 34 than all diseases combined! ##
