What is a Neurologist?

By Dr. Hilburn A neurologist is a physician specializing in the diagnosis & treatment of disorders of the nervous system. The nervous system is comprised of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, & muscles. A neurosurgeon specializes in surgery on the brain & other parts of the nervous system. Some problems that a neurologist will treat include strokes, seizures (epilepsy), headaches, dementia (Alzheimer's disease), multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, & various types of pain. A neurologist may serve as a consultant to other physicians or provide care to patients with chronic & long-term neurological disorders. ## Neurology Terms for the Brain---A to C from Dr. Hilburn Atrophy-Shrinkage in size of a particular structure, such as muscle groups or the brain. Aura-Symptoms that occur prior to a particular neurological problem (such as seizure or migraine) that serve as a warning that an abnormal spell may follow. This includes disturbances in vision, smell, or perception. Basal Ganglia-A series of structures located deep in the brain responsible for motor movements. Blepharospasm-The involuntary closure of the eyes & lids. CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) Scan-A specialized X-ray examination often used to visualize the brain & spinal structures. Cerebral Aneurysm-A defect that results in weakness in the wall of a blood vessel that can lead to bleeding in the brain. Central Nervous System-The brain & spinal cord. Cluster Headache-more common in males resulting in one sided severe pain around the eye, usually occurring at night & associated with nasal stuffiness & tearing of the eye. Coma-A state of unconsciousness which patients lie unresponsive with the eyes closed. ##
