“O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved & mercy more than life!
America! America! May God like gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness
And ever gain divine.”
With the founding of the USA army in 1775-over a year before the Declaration of Independence--the US Army has played a vital role in the growth & development of our country. The country has defended itself against many who did not understand the constitution & its parameters. Of course, the country has made terrible mistakes in the handling of issues such as: slavery, treatment of the American Indians, early immigrants, & the treatment of mental illness. Yet America continues to evolve to a more unified lifestyle & through it all has been the USA Army. As other branches of service were quickly added to our nation one fact remains: the USA Army remained 1st and faithful in our history.
It is only fitting that our nation take care of it’s oldest & dearest protectors by providing more than adequate care for our wounded soldiers. This is especially true when so many have & continue to have wounds & illness from head traumas & brain injury. The recent exchanges in varies countries have shown through military medical testing that the damage to the brain when IUD’s & IED’s explode around soldiers deserves notice.
Unfortunately war & skirmishes have been a reality throughout time, but now medical help is available to soldiers & family/friends who become care-givers. Indianapolis, IN is one USA city, leading the way in dealing with seriously wounded soldiers coming home from Irag. Roudebush Veterans Affairs Medical Center is an 11-bed unit offering services to those with head injury & brain injury, as well as, other serious war related injuries.

Hope for Tomorrow
We say good bye to spring as summer is upon us. It is time for outdoor picnics, walking around the block or a time to visit with friends.
Ecclesiastes 5.18-“…It is good & fitting for one to eat & drink & enjoy the good of all his/her labor…all the days of his/her life…this is a gift from God…”
Yet for the brain injured or care-givers it is often a time to reflect on how life has changed--regressed or progressed. As with everything in life, everything changes-one’s abilities, personality & physical health. Depression can slowly pursue if we do not lay hold of it…God’s promise to each person, whether physically challenged or not:
Daniel 10:19-“…Be strong…strengthen… for the Lord has strengthened me…”
Although each day is an unknown, it is also an opportunity to start fresh everyday…to take hold of the challenges & struggles. To prove to oneself that life can be fulfilling despite health challenges.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-“To everything there is a season …A time to break down, a time to build up…”
The specifics of each person’s brain injury varies, but one thing that is common is the fact that physical &/or mental challenges can prohibit or impair one from doing what was once taken for granted. Life becomes a challenge every second, every minute, & every day. A disability is either hidden to the public or “out there” for people to see & perhaps judge us by. One who does not judge us by our impairments or short-comings is our Heavenly Father. We too can change with the season. We need to intentionally choose to be invigorated & grow with whatever opportunities life brings our way. Window-shopping, power walking or bicycling are imperative physical tasks God would choose us to embrace.
Ecclesiastes 5:3“…a dream comes through much activity…”
Reading or listening to tapes help provide a positive attitude, but it is up to each individual to choose joy & peace. This, we must forever keep in the forefront as we meet the challenges of the moment of every day.
